Module One: Lesson Two

Public Awareness

In accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Part C Code of Federal Regulations, 34 CFR, Section 303.320, public awareness materials and activities provide information to the general public about Early Steps, how to gain access to early intervention services, the Central Directory and child find activities. Both the Early Steps State Office and Local Early Steps conduct public awareness activities. It is important that Local Early Steps tailor their outreach activities to the diverse needs of their service areas and populations served, so that all families in the area will have the opportunity to learn about the benefits of early intervention. Public awareness activities may include, but are not limited to the following: brochures and posters displayed in doctors' offices, hospitals, health departments, child care centers, and other appropriate locations; television, radio and newspaper releases; display boards set up at conferences, meetings and public awareness events; speaking engagements; and use of toll-free telephone services.

Central Directory

In accordance with the IDEA, Part C Regulations, 34 CFR, Section 303.301, a Central Directory function is required of all states providing services under the auspices of IDEA, Part C. The purpose of the Central Directory is to provide a coordinated system of information and referral services for families of infants and toddlers with special needs. In Florida, an independent, non-profit agency provides a toll-free number for information and referral through a contract with the Early Steps State Office. The toll free number is 800-654-4440. The Early Steps State Office maintains the Directory of Resources function found in the Florida Early Steps section.
