Module Two: Lesson One

Early Intervention in Natural Environments

Now that you know the meaning of natural environments, how do we provide services and supports in everyday routines, activities, and places? The foundation of the Early Steps service delivery system is rooted in the five-component model for delivering early intervention in natural environments developed by Robin McWilliam, Ph.D. For this reason, in August, 2004, the Early Steps State Office offered a training teleconference featuring Dr. McWilliam. The purpose of this teleconference was to provide an evidence-based, national perspective on early intervention services and how this perspective matches Florida's Early Steps service delivery system.

As a follow-up to the teleconference, Dr. McWilliam authored an article for the Early Steps State Office for continued use in training. The article entitled, Early Intervention in Natural Environments: A Five-Component Model, is excerpted throughout the three lessons in this module, as are video clips from the teleconference mentioned above. For the references cited by Dr. McWilliam, please see the full version of the article in the Resource Bank.

Dr. McWilliam is currently the director of the Center for Child Development at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. To learn more about Robin McWilliams visit his website at www.vanderbiltchildrens.com
