Key Elements of the Primary Service Provider Model

The key elements of an integrated service delivery model are that you have to have functional goals for it to work, because you've got one person....think of the person as like a funnel. This is the person who is taking the expertise from various team members, including his or her own expertise, and providing support to the family in carrying out the programs developed by the team. But, if each individual team member came up with his or her goals, then they aren't necessarily going to work, well, it's going to be harder for the family to implement them in everyday routines, as I've mentioned earlier.

You gotta have functional goals. And so I want to make the case that, don't try to implement the primary service provider model, without paying very close attention to the IFSP development process, too. And that is addressed in the new policies, so pay attention to that part, too, and I would urge you to think always about engagement, independence and social relationships in routines, because those domains do not belong to disciplines.

When we think about development the way it's done in testing, this is another reason why we should not base intervention on testing. We think about development in terms of cognitive, language, gross motor, fine motor, social, and self help, and that's not how life works, that way.

Also, some people think that those domains belong to a certain discipline, so if a child has deficits, delays in fine motor, we think that we have to have an OT goal. Well, that' the wrong way of thinking.
