How do I know when my baby is hungry?

Keeping your baby close to you will help you learn to know when your baby is hungry.

When your baby is hungry:

  • You may see an increase in body movement such as stretching, rapid eye movement, and hand-to-mouth movement.

  • Some babies may ask in a more demanding way - by crying.  Learning to recognize the earlier cues may help your baby to be calm and feed better.

  • Your baby may turn her head and open her mouth in search of food.  This is called a "rooting reflex." It is nature's way of helping your baby find your nipple.
