Engineered Systems (Mitigation Systems Not Using Active Soil Depressurization)

The Florida Standard for Mitigation of Radon in Existing Buildings as published by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation and included in the latest Florida Building Codes defines ventilation as the process of supplying or removing air, by natural or mechanical means, to or from any space.  These ventilation systems are referred to as engineered systems according to the Florida Building Code.

To meet the standard in section C502.3 of Chapter 61-38.003, F.A.C., an engineered radon mitigation system must have a system function indicator which shall be either a visual device conveniently visible to building occupants, or a device that produces a minimum 60 decibel audible signal.  For radon mitigation systems classified as an engineered system per Chapter 61-38.001, F.A.C  you are required to provide the name and license of the AC contractor or engineer you will work with on these mitigations.  The design of engineered radon mitigation systems also requires both the signature of a Florida professional engineer and a Florida Certified radon mitigation specialist. An air-conditioning or mechanical contractor can substitute for an engineer when the system meets the practice exemptions under Florida Statutes 471.003(h).  A general copy of the mitigation design signed by the radon mitigation specialist and sealed according to 471.003 F.S., and 553.79 F.S. (64E-5.1207(11), FAC., and 2007 Florida Building Code: Building Appendix C Section C501/2007 and Florida Building Code Residential Appendix E Section E501) shall be included in the application.

Primary mitigation systems relying on the pressurization of the conditioned space for radon control shall provide us with the following documentation:

Information on how the business plans to comply with requirements of Chapter 61-38.001, F.A.C.  and the Florida Standard for Mitigation of Existing Buildings.  In effect this requires mitigation businesses partner with a State Licensed Professional Engineer.  A state licensed mechanical contractor can substitute as an engineer for those systems that meet the exemptions of 471.003 F.S.  Additionally, provide this office with a copy of subcontractors or A/C contractors you plan to use on your installations.   Future mitigation files for each installation of an engineered system shall include the Florida licensed professional engineer or equivalent that works with you on that mitigation job.
