The Volusia County Health Department developed this interactive multimedia training program to teach elementary school-aged children and their parents mosquito prevention techniques for West Nile Virus. It reviews good prevention practices such as removal of breeding habitat and community-wide control measures; and personal protective measures including use of appropriate clothing, screening, and repellents. It also reviews the public health problems associated with mosquitos. This training conforms to the State of Florida Science and Health Sunshine State Standards for Grades PreK - 5 and was distributed to all schools in Volusia County.
The CD ROM has games the children can play while teaching them about mosquitos. Children can take a checklist page home and go around their homes with their parents and mark off places that mosquitos hide and get rid of these places. Teachers can use the guide to follow the CD ROM and both the CD ROM and the guide have resources for additional information.
Objectives of the program include: the stages of the mosquito life cycle, identification of mosquito breeding places and how to attempt to eliminate them, effective protection techniques, and how to protect their family and pets.
