DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH ANNOUNCES NEW DIRECTOR OF
CHARLOTTE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT

~ Dr. Henry Kurban to Lead Charlotte County Health Department ~

 

TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Department of Health (DOH) announces the appointment of Dr. Henry Kurban as Director for the Charlotte County Health Department. The Charlotte County Board of Commissioners accepted his appointment after a year long search for a permanent Director. Dr. Kurban replaces Mary Kay Burns, who served as Interim Administrator while continuing to lead the DeSoto County Health Department.

Dr. Kurban is passionate about bringing preventive medicine to Charlotte County. He is a board certified preventive medicine specialist and a member of the American College of Preventive Medicine. He served as Health Director at the Virginia Department of Health, Eastern Shore Health District, a small rural health department and Acting Medical Officer of Health for the Thunder Bay District Health Unit in Northern Ontario's largest city. He was Assistant Professor at Northern Ontario School of Medicine, Clinical Sciences Division, Faculties of Medicine - Lakehead and Laurentian Universities; External Adjunct Professor, Master of Public Health Program, Lakehead University; and recently held the appointment of Assistant Professor, Department of Family and Community Medicine, Eastern Virginia Medical School.

Dr. Kurban has worked with a variety of private and public health care organizations focusing primarily on continuous quality improvement projects. He served as a team leader for the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Program where he evaluated and prepared a business development model for the Johns Hopkins Home Care Group. He was a quality improvement team leader with Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States, where he managed the implementation of a pilot program involving the use of an electronic population care management software tool. Dr. Kurban led efforts to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the outpatient care management of a physician's panel of diabetic patients. The results of the pilot program were presented as part of the Institute of Health Improvement's (IHI) Triple Aim initiative. He is also trained in smoking cessation counseling and chronic diseases risk factor management.

Dr. Kurban earned his Medical Degree at University of Western Ontario, a Masters of Business Administration at McGill University, and a Masters in Public Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

The mission of the Charlotte County Health Department is to protect and promote the health of all residents and visitors in Charlotte County. Medical services are offered in Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda, and Englewood. The Port Charlotte location is also home to a dental clinic, Vital Statistics (birth and death records), Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), Disease Control and Prevention, and Administration.
