Sexually-Transmitted Disease (STD)

Florida statutes require that many disease be reported to the local County Health Department. The STD program receives all STD case reports and follows up to ensure that prompt and adequate treatment and counseling are provided to slow the spread of disease. Rapid notification enables contacts to access counseling, testing and specialized medical care as needed. This improves health outcomes and prolongs longevity.

Protecting patient confidentiality is the foundation upon which the program is built. Specially trained Disease Intervention Specialists work closely with health care providers, patients and others who may be at high risk. The program also works with both public and private providers in the four county area of St. Lucie, Martin, Indian River and Okeechobee Counties to better serve the area's needs.
