Sexually transmitted diseases (STD's) are infections you can may by having sex with someone who has an STD.  If you have sex just once with an infected partner, you can become infected whether the sex is genital, oral, or anal.  You often will not be able to tell if your partner has an STD, because sometimes there are no visible warning signs.

Some STDs leave women unable to have children.  Some may kill you or have long-term effects on your health.  If a woman is pregnant, and has an STD, she and her developing baby may both be affected.

People who have sex can protect themselves by taking the following precautions:

  • Don't treat sex casually
  • Have only one sex partner
  • Don't use drugs
  • Always use a condom correctly

The Baker County Health Department has specially trained nurses and physicians to examine, diagnose, and treat both men and women.  Early diagnosis and treatment is the best way to decrease complications and in many cases obtain a complete cure.  STD examinations are by appointment any day of the week.

The most common symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases are genital burning, itching, and discharge.  Whenever symptoms appear that may indicate a sexually transmitted disease, contact your health care provider right away.
