Dr. Porter Lifts Quarantine for Santa: Curator's Tour

The Florida Department of Health’s own Joe Wright will be delivering an outstanding seasonal message as he portrays Florida’s first State Health Officer, Dr. Joseph Yates Porter. He will be reading an article from the December 1889 Florida Times Union Newspaper accounting Dr. Porter’s lifting of the Yellow Fever Quarantine in Jacksonville in order to let Santa Claus into Jacksonville for Christmas!

Original news clipping from December 1889 obtained from Dr. Porter’s own personal files located in the R.A. Gray Building, Tallahassee, FL – Florida Memory Project:

The newspaper clipping of the story of how Dr. Porter promised to let Santa Claus come to town.
