The Council of Medical Physicists is an advisory council to the Department of Health made up of nine members – one member is a medical physicist who specializes in diagnostic radiological physics, one member is a medical physicist who specializes in therapeutic radiological physics, one member is a medical physicist who specializes in medical nuclear radiological physics, one member is a physician who is board certified by the American Board of Radiology, one member is a chiropractic physician who practices radiology, and three consumer members. Despite the expiration of their term, Council members continue to serve until they have been replaced. Members are appointed by the State Surgeon General.
