FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH ASSISTS PRACTITIONERS WITH VERIFICATION OF CONTINUING EDUCATION
~ CE @ Renewal project combines continuing education reporting with licensure renewal ~

TALLAHASSEE—The Florida Department of Health (DOH) has launched CE @ Renewal, a new approach that verifies a practitioner’s required continuing education record at the time of licensure renewal. Previously health care professionals have been required to complete continuing education hours, but were not required to report these hours as a prerequisite for renewal of their license.

The project will be implemented in two phases. Phase I will prompt the licensee to input his/her additional required continuing education hours but will not prevent licensure renewal. This phase began in January 2013 and will continue through 2014. Phase II will begin January 2015 and will require that continuing education hours are verified in order to proceed with renewal.

“As DOH strives to promote the health and safety of the people of Florida, we continuously improve the efficiency of all of our services,” said Lucy Gee, Director of the Division of Medical Quality Assurance. “The CE @ Renewal project promotes continuing education compliance and allows health care practitioners to combine reporting requirements for ease and convenience.”

By integrating verification of continuing education compliance with the renewal process this project eliminates the need to audit health care practitioners after licensure renewal. This improved business process allows the Bureau of Enforcement and the Prosecution Services Unit to pursue higher priority cases.

The Department of Health has worked with health care associations and many community partners to inform Florida’s health care professionals about this new integrated business process.
