Special Needs Shelter Interagency Committee
Special Needs Shelter Interagency Committee (SpNS) under the direction of the Department of
Health. The legislation authorized the State Surgeon General to establish an interagency committee with the State Surgeon General (or an appointed designee) to serve as the committee’s chair. The committee, originally formed to address issues not dealt with in the state’s Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan, identifies and works to resolve special needs sheltering challenges.
The interagency committee is championed by the Bureau of Preparedness and Response and includes approximately 35 members from different state agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other local associations. The committee has addressed specific topics, including:
- Functional Needs Support Services
- Level of Care Planning
- Animals in Shelters
- Discharge Planning
- Mental Health and Cognitive Impairments
Committee work could not be done without key stakeholders. Participation is appreciated as Florida strives to meet the medical needs of special needs clients and vulnerable populations.
