Dr. Ernest Block Appointed Trauma Medical Director

FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH CONTINUES TO STRENGTHEN TRAUMA PROGRAM
~ Trauma Surgeon Dr. Ernest Block to join Department of Health ~

TALLAHASSEE—The Florida Department of Health (DOH) today announced that Ernest Block, MD, MBA, EMT-P, FACS, FCCM has been appointed to the position of Trauma Medical Director. Dr. Block has served in many roles in the field of trauma care and is renowned statewide as a trauma surgeon, professor of surgery, and published author and researcher. As Trauma Medical Director, Dr. Block will apply his professional medical expertise to DOH’s planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of Florida’s Trauma System. This will include the areas of adult and pediatric trauma care, disaster preparedness, mass casualty response and injury prevention.

“Our state is very fortunate to have Dr. Block join our trauma team,” said State Surgeon General and Secretary for Health Dr. John H. Armstrong. “Dr. Block’s leadership and performance improvement expertise will help our state’s trauma system move forward for the benefit of all of Florida’s citizens and visitors.”

Dr. Block began his career as a surgeon in 1994 and has worked in large hospital settings throughout his career. He most recently served as Director of Acute Care Surgery at Holmes Regional in Melbourne, and currently holds the position of Professor of Surgery at the University of Central Florida School of Medicine. Dr. Block completed his Bachelor of Arts studies at Cornell University, his Masters of Business Administration at the University of Tennessee and his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Miami. He completed his residency in General Surgery at Albert Einstein Medical Center and Fellowships in Surgical Critical Care and Trauma at the University of Miami. He is a past-President of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma and past-President of the Florida Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.
