The Florida Youth Tobacco Survey (FYTS) was administered in the spring of 2020. A total of 683 public high schools and middle schools in 65 Florida counties participated in the FYTS. There were 56,266 students who participated in the 2020 FYTS; 27,157 at the high school level and 29,109 at the middle school level.
The data presented in this database were weighted to represent the entire population of public middle and high school students in Florida. The longstanding minimum overall response rate to achieve weighted data had been a 60% combined (school x student) response rate. Given the unusual nature of 2020 data collection due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the FYTS vendor and the Florida Department of Health (DOH) agreed that lowering the threshold to a 50% response rate was acceptable with some additional data comparisons.
Additionally, because of the statewide school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, several counties had lower than expected response rates. If a county's overall response rate was below 50%, additional analyses were undertaken to determine if the data would be weighted. Baker, Broward and Liberty counties were not weighted at one or both school levels due to a lack of representative data and a very low response rate.
