The mission and vision of the Hepatitis Prevention Program is to prevent the transmission of viral hepatitis and eliminate viral hepatitis in Florida. To achieve this, the current strategy of the program is to test adults at risk for hepatitis B and hepatitis C, diagnose them, and ensure that they are linked to care. The Hepatitis Prevention Program works with county health departments and community-based organizations in Florida to implement this strategy.

 Hepatitis Resources

The Hepatitis Prevention Progam provides resources and trainings to clients and providers, including 'Hepatitis 101', 'Viral Serology', and the Hepatitis Resource Guide (to view, select the 'Hepatitis Resources' tab on the left). Additionally, we offer educational materials free-of-charge (see the 'Education Materials' tab on the left navigation panel).

  • Hepatitis 101 Training
  • Viral Serology Training

The Viral Hepatitis and Outbreak Response Section (VHORS) offers the "Hepatitis 101: An Introduction to Hepatitis A, B, and C" training. This webinar is a one-hour, basic training and can be accessed through TRAIN Florida. Any healthcare worker can participate in the Hepatitis 101 training. Continuing education credit of one (1) hour is available for all licensed nurses in the state of Florida. You can find this course by using the course number 1055759.

To register, visit: Florida TRAIN and search for "FDOH Hepatitis 101." If you are not a Florida Department of Health employee or have not set up a TRAIN Florida account, you can do so on the TRAIN Florida's home page. For new users or Non-Department of Health Employees, please review the "How To" document to set up an account.

Learning Objectives
By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Describe symptoms, risk factors, and modes of transmission for hepatitis A (HAV), hepatitis B (HBV), and hepatitis C (HCV)
  • Identify clients who should be referred for hepatitis vaccination and/or testing
  • Facilitate a provider-client conversation on viral hepatitis risk factors and test results
  • Recognize laboratory test results
  • Describe risk factors for HIV and hepatitis co-infection

The Viral Hepatitis and Outbreak Response Section (VHORS) offers "Viral Hepatitis Serology Workshop". This is a one-hour intermediate training and can be accessed online at any time. This course provides an overview of laboratory testing, results and interpretations. Any healthcare worker can participate and continuing education credit of one (1) hour is available for all licensed nurses in the state of Florida.  You can find this course by using the course number 1059496.

Learning Objectives
By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the available serological tests for hepatitis A, B and C
  • Provide an overview of interpretations for hepatitis A, B and C test results
  • Distinguish between acute and chronic viral hepatitis infections, and the serological makers associated with each
  • Understand the efficacy of the viral hepatitis vaccine and make recommendations to clients

Upon completion, you will have the option to print out a certificate. We also create a weekly report of nurses who take the class and send the information to the Department of Health Office of Performance Improvement for CEUs.
