TALLAHASSEE—The Florida Department of Health congratulates Olga Connor, director of Communication and Legislative Affairs, Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County, as the 2014 Sherman Winn “I Care” award winner at this year’s Miami-Dade County Days. The award was sponsored by the Miami-Dade County League of Cities and is named after the late Senator Sherman Winn. The “I Care” award is given to an individual whose work has made a positive difference in the community.

“The Florida Department of Health applauds Olga Connor in winning the “I Care” award,” said Meade Grigg, Deputy Secretary for Statewide Services. “We are proud to have someone as dedicated to public health and her community as Ms. Connor.”

Throughout her years of service with the State of Florida, Ms. Connor has been instrumental in developing and implementing health and human services programs throughout Miami-Dade County. Ms. Connor has a long history of community service. She currently is a member of the President’s Council at Florida International University (FIU), the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, the leadership committee of the Health Foundation of South Florida’s Healthy Aging Collaborative, and the Department of Elder Affairs Advisory Council.

Ms. Connor has served on the board of the Alliance for Aging, Inc., the Girls Scouts Council of South Florida, the Florida State Board of Optometry, the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling, the Coalition of Hispanic American Women, the Private Industry Council, the Miami-Dade College-South East Florida Literacy Center and Family Counseling Services. Ms. Connor has received numerous awards some of which include a certificate of merit from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for exemplary customer service, and the Alliance for Aging Elder Advocate award for her outstanding leadership in advocating on behalf of seniors. Recently, Ms. Connor was also recognized as the recipient of the 2014 FIU Path Award for Advocacy. She served on the Board of Trustees of her Alma Mater, Clarke University, which also recognized her work with the Humanitarian Service Award.
