Mental health conditions and stress are connected to many leading causes of disease and disability in society. In fact, 1 in 5 adults experience a mental health condition each year, and depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Protecting the mental well-being of the workforce is important for individuals’ physical health, social well-being and productivity. There are many factors in the workplace that influence the mental wellness of individual employees. Understanding and addressing factors that affect people’s mental wellness at work have several benefits, for both the workers and organization. Employees should raise matters of concern and seek guidance and support from their organization representative or use the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), if one is provided.

Mental well-being in the workplace is relevant to all employees and everyone can benefit from improved mental well-being at work. Addressing workplace mental health can help strengthen protective factors of employment, reduce risk factors for mental health conditions and improve general health. This information is intended to offer support to working people and raise awareness about mental health, reduce stigma and other barriers to care in the workplace and strengthen resilience to maintain wellness.
