Florida's family planning and related preventive health services are available to both males and females, including teens, in all 67 counties through the local county health departments or contracted agencies. Family planning services are provided on a voluntary basis in a confidential manner. Culturally sensitive information and the value of planning your pregnancies are available in order to make an informed decision regarding the use of birth control.
Individuals have access to FDA-approved birth control methods and supplies. Abstinence counseling, information and education, including abstinence counseling, is available to all who want and are in need of services. Services are provided on a sliding fee scale, based on family household income and size. Persons determined to have incomes up to 100% of poverty do not pay fees for services.
Services available include pregnancy testing and counseling, physical examinations, screening for hypertension, breast and cervical cancer, and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV counseling and testing. Also available is counseling and education for health promotion and disease prevention. Follow-up and referral services are offered based on the individual's history and need for medical and/or social services.
Family planning plays a key role in the prevention of unexpected pregnancy, including teen pregnancy. Preventing unexpected pregnancy improves birth outcomes. In addition, family planning information, education, and services reduce both the incidence and impact of sexually transmitted diseases through screening and treatment.
