General Counsel

John Wilson began began serving as General Counsel for the Florida Department of Health in April 2022. John is responsible for overseeing the Office of General Counsel (OGC) which provides legal representation for the Department of Health. OGC also provides training, oversight and coordination for the Department's attorneys throughout the state; prepares General Counsel opinions; coordinates risk management referrals, legal assignments and legal representation for all of the Department’s programs and local health departments; and ensures timely and accurate responses to legal issues facing the Department.

John previously served as the Deputy General Counsel for the Department’s Prosecution Services Unit. Before joining the Department of Health in 2016, John was an assistant state attorney for the Office of the State Attorney, Second Judicial Circuit. He appeared on behalf of the State of Florida as a prosecutor in misdemeanor and felony cases.

John earned his Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Bachelor of Arts in Criminology from the University of Florida in 2007 and his Juris Doctor from Florida State University in 2010.
