COVID-19 is a respiratory disease that is caused by a coronavirus known as SARS-CoV-2, which was first identified in 2019.
File a Complaint
The Florida Department of Health works alongside the Attorney General to ensure Floridians are protected from losing their jobs, denied access and services from, businesses, governmental entities, and educational institutions due to vaccine, COVID-19 testing, or mask mandates, and to protect individuals’ rights to make their own health care choices.
Transmission
The virus is primarily transmitted from person to person through droplets made when infected people cough, sneeze, or talk. Less often, a person might become infected with COVID-19 by touching a surface or object contaminated with COVID-19 virus and then touching their own mouth, eyes, or nose.
Symptoms
People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. Common COVID-19 include:
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Fatigue
- Muscle or body aches
- Headache
- New loss of taste or smell
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
Treatment
If you are sick with COVID-19, stay home. Most people with COVID-19 have mild symptoms that do not require medical treatment.
- Do not share cups and eating utensils
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Get plenty of rest
Prevention
To protect yourself and others from respiratory illness, follow these five essential steps:
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand rub
- Avoid close contact with sick individuals, including handshakes and touching
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces
- Stay home when you are sick, and ensure that sick children stay home as well
- Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing. If you don’t have a tissue, use your upper sleeve or elbow, not your hands
