Children and Disasters

The FEMA Children and Disasters webpage reflects resources available to support the integration and implementation of children’s disaster related needs into preparedness, planning, response and recovery efforts initiated by state, local and tribal governments, as well as stakeholders responsible for the temporary care of children.

Disaster Distress Helpline

SAMHSA's Disaster Distress Helpline, 1-800-985-5990, provides 24/7, year-round crisis counseling and support to people experiencing emotional distress related to natural or human-caused disasters.

National Association of School Psychologists

Association that supports school psychologists to enhance the learning and mental health of all children and youth. The site contains information for parents and educators on coping with crisis and disasters.

National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement

The National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement (NCSCB) aims to promote an appreciation of the role that schools can play in supporting students, staff and families at times of crisis and loss.

Promoting Adjustment and Helping Children Cope

American Academy of Pediatrics web page with resources for providing psychological support to help ensure that health care facilities, medical providers, and adults who may be in a position to help are prepared to meet the emotional needs of children and help to mitigate mental health consequences of disasters.
