Tallahassee, Fla. — Today, the Florida Department of Health celebrates the start of National Nurses Week, May 6-12, 2026, recognizing the contributions of Florida’s nurses. On May 2, 2025, Governor Ron DeSantis signed a proclamation, establishing this week as an annual recognition of the dedication, compassion, and expertise of Florida’s more than 600,000 licensed nurses who provide essential care to our communities.

Nurses serve on the front lines of public health, delivering services in hospitals, clinics, schools, long-term care facilities, and emergency response settings. Their commitment strengthens Florida’s health care system and supports the well-being of communities across the state. This week provides an important opportunity to express gratitude for their efforts.

“During National Nurses Week, we recognize the vital role nurses play in protecting and advancing the health of our residents and visitors,” said State Surgeon General Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo. “The Department remains committed to strengthening Florida’s nursing workforce through education and licensure.”

The Division of Medical Quality Assurance (MQA) within the Florida Department of Health oversees licensure and regulation for nurses in Florida. Through the Florida Board of Nursing, MQA ensures that registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) meet rigorous standards for safe and competent practice.
