You have learned that the supports and services on the IFSP are determined by the whole team, family members and professionals, working closely together to incorporate all of their observations and information about family routines, the family's priorities within these routines, and subsequently the outcomes. The IFSP team then selects the primary service provider. The primary service provider can be a therapist, other licensed healing arts professional, or an Infant Toddler Developmental Specialist (ITDS). The primary service provider may also function in a dual role as the service coordinator. The PSP is not limited to a specific discipline. To decide who on the team should be the family's PSP, the team should consider the following factors:

  • IFSP outcomes
  • Relationship(s) with learner(s) (e.g. family members, other caregivers, other professionals)
  • Expertise (i.e., not solely discipline)
  • Logistics (i.e., schedules, areas, availability)

Once the PSP is selected, the team determines what help the PSP needs to address each outcome and the type and amount of services needed to strengthen and support parents' and other caregivers' confidence and competence in promoting the child's learning and development.
