Created by the Florida Legislature in 2013, the Cancer Center of Excellence designation recognizes hospitals, treatment centers, and other providers in the state that demonstrate excellence in patient-centered coordinated care for persons undergoing cancer treatment and therapy in Florida.
The designation commends providers that exceed service standards and excel in providing quality, comprehensive, and patient-coordinated care.
The programโs goals are to encourage excellence in cancer care, attract and retain the best cancer care providers to the state, and help Florida providers be recognized nationally as a preferred destination for quality cancer care.

Per section 381.925(2), Florida Statutes, a joint committee comprising members from the Cancer Control and Research Advisory Council (section 1004.435, Florida Statutes) and members from the Biomedical Research Advisory Council (section 215.5602, Florida Statutes) develops rigorous standards, a rating system, and a rating standard for assessing applicants seeking a Cancer Center of Excellence designation. An annual status report is submitted to the Legislature by December 15 annually. The performance standards are reviewed at least every three years and were last updated in November 2024 by the joint committee.
