Health Notifications

Below is the state’s repository of Health Caution, Health Alert, and Lift Alert press releases that have been issued county health departments (CHDs) in response to a harmful algal bloom in the affected waterbodies.

Blue-Green Algae

  • A blue-green algae Health Caution is issued when DEP sampling results show that a bloom has been visually detected and/or when sampling results indicate the dominant algal species to be cyanobacteria.
  • A blue-green algae Health Alert is issued when cyanotoxin is present.
  • A blue-green algae Health Alert is lifted once toxins are not detected according to the analyses obtained from DEP-coordinated resampling of the bloom or if 30 days have elapsed since the last sampling date.

Red Tide

  • A red tide Health Caution is issued when Karenia brevis cell counts are between 10,000 and 100,000 cells per liter.
  • A red tide Health Alert is issued when Karenia brevis cell counts are greater than 100,000 cells per liter.
  • A red tide Health Alert is lifted when Karenia brevis cell counts have dropped below the 100,000 cells per liter threshold.
